Uhuru Park closed indefinitely

"We apologise for any inconveniences caused"

Earlier, the County Government issued a statement claiming that the venue had been booked by the Nairobi Business Community and two other churches on January 30, same date for Odinga's inaguaration.

“Notice is hereby given to the General Public that Uhuru Park Grounds is scheduled to undergo phased improvement works in order to enhance recreational usefulness to its visitors. We apologise for any inconveniences caused,” read the notice issued by County Secretary Leboo Ole Morintat.

The County government revealed that during the time of closure, Uhuru Park will remain out of bounds to the public for any gatherings or meetings.

The business community, which claimed to have been allowed to use the venue, had announced it was planning to hold a free medical clinic targeting street children who would wish to get circumcised.

Meanwhile, NASA has changed the venue for the oath plan but has maintained that Nairobi would play host to the event.

This comes even as US ambassador to Kenya Robert Godec held a meeting with Mr Odinga on Monday at Capitol Hill, to convince him abandon the plan.

Mr Godec has been calling for dialogue and has since held separate meetings with Nasa principals and its leadership in the National Assembly as well as those from the ruling Jubilee party side.

The ambassador wants the two opposing sides to engage in a dialogue that would hopefully end the political stalemate.

Amani National Congress secretary general Godfrey Osotsi affirmed on Wednesday morning that the Raila Odinga oath will take place in Nairobi, but failed once again to state the venue.

ODM's Director of Communication Philip Etale, however, in a tweet said Uhuru Park was only among the five options the coalition had in mind.

"Was Uhuru's inauguration held at Uhuru Park? Panick mode [sic]. Uhuru Park, as I said, was just number 5 option," Mr Etale said.
