ODM chairman dies in road accident

ODM fraternity has described him as having been a pillar in the party.

In a statement  to the press, ODM Executive Director Mr Oduor Ong’wen described the late as having been a pillar of ODM operations in the area, especially in the just concluded elections, as he mobilized support for Nasa leader Raila Odinga.

The ODM party has learnt with profound shock of the passing on of Mr. William Koech, Branch Chairman Kipkelion East in Kericho County through a road accident on Tuesday this week.

“Mr. Koech was a dedicated member of the ODM party and worked tirelessly to strengthen, sell the policies and agenda of the party in Kipkelion East and extended the same to the larger Kericho County,” Mr Ong’wen said in a statement on Thursday.

He added: “Even after the exodus of majority of party members to other political parties, Mr. Koech remained steadfast and his belief in change and good governance was a motivation to many. The late Koech contributed immensely to the growth of the party in Rift Valley region something that earned him a nickname ‘Bwana Chungwa’ in Kericho.”

The passing on of the chairman comes amid rising concerns over the road carnages witnessed in the recent past, which have left nearly 250 people dead in December last year alone.

Meanwhile, The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) will be introducing anti-rolling body standard gadgets by the end of May this year, Director General Francis Meja told a parliamentary committee on Friday.

Mr Meja, who appeared before the parliamentary committee on Transport said the move will help to curb fatalities, which spiked to nearly 250 in December only.

“All Passenger Service Vehicles [PSV] to be fitted with anti-rolling body standard by May to curb fatalities,” Mr Meja told the committee when he appeared for grilling.

President Uhuru Kenyatta last week Tuesday directed that all NTSA officers out of the Kenyan roads, and urged traffic police officers to take over their duties, in a bid to curb road crashes.
