Will Sonko's new move change the fares for Nairobians?

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has announced a clear plan to root out rogue matatus in the city.

Speaking to the Matatu Owners Association in Nairobi, Mr Sonko maintained that his plans to address the notorious traffic menace in the city are taking shape.

“Our discussion focused on a joint effort to streamline the public transport sector, not only to ease traffic congestion, but also in reinstate order,” Mr Sonko said.

He divulged that the sector representatives assured the new governor that they will work closely to outdo cartels in the industry.

“The sector pledged to work with my government, acknowledging that they stood to benefit immensely from an organized, coordinated and well-regulated transport system,” Mr Sonko added.

He added: "I want to assure you of my commitment to improve the flow of traffic as pledged in my manifesto, while routing out the cartels at City Hall that have been extorting and harassing matatu owners for their selfish gains.”

Mr Sonko disclosed that already there are plans to hold a joint meeting between key stakeholder including the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), the National Police Service (NPS), the Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (NAMATA), alongside other stakeholders.

“I believe in building strong partnerships that shall not only help us deliver on our promises, but also guarantee the people of Nairobi value for their money,” he added.

Matatu crews in the capital have been on the limelight for indiscipline cases and alleged robbing, especially Lopha Travels Sacco which was on the spot a fortnight ago over robbing and clobbering a passenger.
