4 strategies police have devised to stop Raila's swearing-in

Full details

Pulselive.co.ke has learnt of four different strategies the police could use on Tuesday to stop the oath plan that has since been termed an attempt to overthrow President Uhuru Kenyatta’s-led Government.

Police deployed

We have established that police officers have already been deployed to different areas perceived to be Opposition strongholds.

This was after a Business Insider reporter working with Pulselive.co.ke went to Kawangware 56, an area believed to be NASA’s stronghold, to get the residents' views on Mr. Odinga’s swearing-in.

While having a chat with a group of young men, plain-clothed police officers disrupted the peaceful meeting hurlingnyinyi ndio mnataka kupindua serikali (you are the people who want to overthrow the Government).

They held the group including the reporter - David Ng’ang’a - at gunpoint for a few minutes before releasing him when he identified himself as a journalist.

A report by the Standard  indicates that police officers have been in countless meetings looking at available options they can use to stop the planned swearing-in.

Detaining NASA leaders

Among the options include detaining NASA leaders in their houses or wherever they will be in order to restrict their movement.

A source privy to the meetings told the local daily that if detaining the leaders will be impossible then the leaders and their supporters could be arrested and held at an undisclosed location on the D-day.

Arrests on the D-day

“If we are pushed, you will see arrests all over from ordinary men to even the leaders. We know some of the leaders may even not spend the night in their homes,” the Standard quoted a police officer as saying.

The option of making arrests, however, was challenged as it will be hard to justify it later on.

Block Uhuru Park

The officers also plan to block Uhuru Park as divulged by Mr. Koome during a press briefing.

The Police Commandant cautioned people planning to travel to the city for the swearing-in noting that nobody will be allowed at the Park.

"Tell whoever is thinking of coming to Uhuru Park not to attempt it. We will not allow it," Mr. Koome said.
