Orengo’s wife makes surprise statement after Maraga’s ruling

She spoke a day after the Supreme Court upheld President Uhuru Kenyatta's victory

Ms Murungi came out to passionately defend Chief Justice David Maraga and other Supreme Court judges, stating that those who are unhappy with the ruling should criticise it without insulting judges or undermining their integrity.

The human rights lawyer further threw a jibe at President Uhuru Kenyatta over his infamous statement after the September 1 ruling, where he described some Supreme Court judges as thugs.

“Yes, judges make mistakes, (or as we say, misdirect their minds or misinterpret the law). That's why there's an appeals court. SCOK is an apex court, so no appeal. We can criticize opinion but are bound by it. It is contemptuous to abuse judges or impugn their integrity."

“Respect for the rule of law & Supreme Court (opinions and all Judges) is sacrosanct. I hope there shall not be any 'REVISITING' or threatened consequences [on] the SCOK decision of September 1, and that those who promoted that awful 'Wakora' campaign have withdrawn & apologized,” the lawyer remarked.

Ms Murungi, is also the personal advocate to her husband – a Senior Counsel who led NASA leader Raila Odinga’s legal team during the successful August presidential petition.

She is also a respected international lawyer, who had worked in international justice organizations, including at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) and the International Criminal Court (ICC).
