Chebukati explains what will happen if some counties fail to vote

Questions have been raised on consequences of elections failing to take place in all counties,

The IEBC Chairman assured the country that the IEBC was ready to go on with the election but condemned acts of violence that have been meted out on his officials in some parts of the country.

He, however, added that the Inspector General of Police had assured the IEBC that adequate areas would be provided.

“Based on assurances given to the commission, the elections scheduled for 26 October will proceed as planned,” he stated.

The IEBC boss also warned the government against using excessive force when dealing with protesters.

Asked on the consequences of some counties failing to participate in the Thursday election, Chebukati said that the law allows the electoral commission to suspend voting to a later date under such circumstances.

“Polling can be suspended to another day in areas that face cases of insecurity,” Chebukati assured.

A number of counties in Nyanza have been faced with an unstable security situation as youths barricaded roads and attacked some of the IEBC staff.

In Siaya, distribution of electoral materials was paralysed after IEBC staff went into hiding following threats on their lives.
