CS Farida Karoney warned of dire consequences days after being sworn-in

The new Lands CS has landed in trouble just a few days after assuming office at Ardhi House.

The CS has been asked by the Nandi elders to pull down a fence erected on the disputed land she claims to have bought at Sironoi village.

The elders blamed the CS of fencing off 34 acres instead of the 16 she claims to have bought.

They insisted the 16-acre parcel the CS claims to have purchased was owned by two families in the area.

Serious consequences

"We want that fence pulled down before that area is interfered with. Failure to do so will result in serious consequences," the local council's vice chairman Christopher Koiyogi warned

The elders also condemned the deployment and use of force by armed security officials in the area.

"We condemn the force and violence used against the family of Korir on February 16 by those who fenced off the land," Koyogi added.

Land dispute

At the centre of the controversy is the ownership of a parcel of land in Nandi County which Karoney insists she legally bought from a seller who produced a genuine land title deed and claims she she had the necessary documentation to prove the fact.

The former area MCA Amos Korir disputed Karoney's ownership of the land and claims to own part of the land.

Korir said that they had documents showing that the land belonged to them.

On the day she took oath of office as the new Lands CS at State House, dozens of police officers were deployed at Kamoywo in Chesumei Constituency, Nandi County to enforce a court order giving her permission to fence the piece of land.

The armed police officers were forced to lob teargas cannisters at angry villagers who had attempted to block the land's survey and fencing following court orders.
