Ruto opens up on horrific accident where he almost lost his eye

Ruto speaks of a horrific incident

Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV,  Mr. Ruto disclosed that when police allegedly teargassed him almost two years ago, doctors at Nairobi Hospital referred him to a hospital in SA.

The former Governor stated that though he was mocked for sticking an elastoplast below his right eye, the injury was very serious according to the medics.

“They said that I only had an elastoplast but little do they understand what happened. I was referred to South Africa hospital by Nairobi hospital. And I was given two doctors to take me there.

"The whole face was broken and they told me if they were going to operate me here I would lose my eye because to fix the bones they would inter with the tear bag and there is no repair for it.

"One eye would be dry and therefore it would have to be removed," he said.

Mr. Ruto said that he was given the options of going to South Africa, India, Europe or America within seven days to undergo the sensitive operation.

He added that flying to Europe would have been dangerous because of the long distance.

The former Bomet County boss went on to explain that his whole face was caving in and he was not aware until he went to Nairobi Hospital, where the doctors told him the severity of the injury.

In November 2016, Mr. Ruto claimed that police hit him with a tear gas canister when chaos broke out during a football match in the county.

The chaos was attributed to the upcoming General Election.

After Ruto was photographed with an elastopast on his face, Kenyans in their typical nature started a hashtag dubbed #IsaacRutoChallenge, where they pictured themselves with an elastoplast under the right eye.
