Yesterday’s announcement came at a time when the nation is staring at an acute water shortage and erratic rainfall patterns that has been blamed on massive deforestation in water catchment areas.
Netizens were quick to remind the DP that he opposed efforts by Raila Odinga to evict squatters from Mau forest which is one of the region's largest water towers in 2010.
Although it was a genuine concern by Odinga, the issue took a political twist with Ruto leading Rift Valley MPs in bashing Odinga, accusing him of using the issue in order to win a Nobel Peace Prize.

However, in a change of heart, yesterday was a case of the past returning to haunt as the DP ate a humble pie, acknowledging the need to conserve water towers and tame deforestation.
In 2016, Odinga warned of catastrophic consequences of the controversial Northern collector tunnel which is currently under construction.
He warned that the project would lead to acute water shortage, loss of biodiversity and would turn 7 counties into deserts among others.
Residents of Muranga are currently experiencing acute water shortage with a biting drought reported in other areas of the country.

Gatanga legislator Nduati Ngugi has since joined the opposition chief in calling for a halt in the 6.8 Billion project.
