Wetangula and Mudavadi team up with DP Ruto in opposing Raila’s political move

Rival camps unite against Raila's political move

Addressing the Public in Chavakali, Moses Wetangula and Musalia Mudavadi termed Odinga’s quest for a referendum as a selfish move that is not good for the country.

“Mambo ya kusma ati tulete another tier of Government, hatuwezi kubaliana nayo (We cannot agree to calls calls to introduce another tier of government)”. Wetangula said

The Bungoma Senator added that “Tuna ugatuzi na tuna jukumu la kuhakikisha ugatuzi inafanya kazi (We have devolution and we have a responsibility of ensuring that devolution works).”

Speaking at the same venue, former Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale refered to the calls for constitutional amendments as “hyena’s agenda that is personal” and expressed confidence that it will fail.

Earlier this week, DP Ruto took a swipe at Odinga, stating that it was needless to waste Billions in a referendum. He instead urged him to use the current constitution to strengthen devolution.

The push seeks to have the country divided into 14 states, introducing a new level of government.

Meanwhile, Odinga has found support from unlikely quarters after MPs allied to the ruling Jubilee party hinted at supporting the initiative.

Commenting on the push for a referendum, Jubilee Party vice chairman David Murathe remarked that “Let the people decide” hinting that well placed individuals within the party are in fact supporting the push by Odinga.

A parallel push sponsored by Tiaty MP William Kamket seeking to reintroduce the position of a Prime Minister has also received the backing of a section of MPs.

Several KANU MPs have also declared support for the push for a constitutional amendment that could see the position of a Prime Minister re-introduced into the constitution.
