Sonko moves to High Court

The move comes barely three days after his Deputy Polycarp Igathe resigned from office.

The move by the governor is meant to allow the audit of pending bills amounting to Sh60bn.

Through the City Hall lawyer Thomas Letangule, Sonko stated that says the previous administration of the Nairobi City County led by former Governor Evans Kidero and the defunct Nairobi City Council incurred huge amounts of debt which have continued to accrue at exorbitant interest.

Arrest warrants

In the suit, Sonko also wants the court to suspend the execution of hundreds of arrest warrants for imprisonment against county officials, a move that according to the governor, will pose a great threat to the functions of the county government and the greater public.

The governor insisted that arresting and detaining the county officials has the potential of bringing to a standstill or throwing into disarray the functioning of Nairobi County Government.

Already the Nairobi County Government has started an audit of over 600 beneficiaries of Kidero's bursaries that City Hall suspect was used to to award Sh200 million in the awarding of the bursaries.

Igathe claimed that he had failed to earn the trust of Governor Sonko to enable him serve the people of Nairobi as promised during campaigns.

“Dear Nairobians, it is with a heavy heart that I resign my seat as elected Deputy Governor of Nairobi City County effective 1pm on 31st Jan 2018,” read his resignation letter.
