Bitter exchange in NASA as principals head to separate rallies

Mudavadi, Raila, Kalonzo head separate ways in a series of rallies over the weekend

In an interview with The Standard, Musalia Mudavadi disclosed that with the imminent exit of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) NASA would forge a new super alliance, much stronger than the opposition coalition as currently constituted.

Mudavadi trailed his guns on ODM boss Raila Odinga, accusing him of abandoning the fight for electoral justice and reforms in exchange for ‘whatever material offers.’

He stated that the deal remains “hollow without a public interest agenda and institutional framework to set it off. We in NASA had a National Agenda on dialogue which isn’t mentioned in the handshake document.”

His counterparts in ODM have also not had kind words for him, with some out rightly accusing him of being a seasoned betrayer.

“Others can talk but not Mudavadi, his betrayal started in 2002, he followed it up in 2013 and now his political sins are many, he tried to atone for them in the last elections, but he still has some debts to pay,” said Suna East MP Junet.

The recent ranting by the three NASA principals who were left out of the Raia-Uhuru deal has attracted criticism from across the political divide.

In a clear reference to the criticism from the three NASA principals, Raila’s Spokesman Dennis Onyango pointed out that real leaders do not spend time talking and lamenting over what others have done.

“Real leaders spend their time doing what they and what the country will see to be better than what the others have done. That is what we expect from those opposed to the handshake. Let them come up with a better alternative,” said Mr Onyango.

Ford Kenya secretary general Eseli Simiyu, a close ally to Wetangula added his voice to the debate stating that “It is better ODM leaves NASA than wrecking our parties. This NASA thing is not working. Some of us are wondering if this was part of the handshake”.

In the midst of the political chaos, Lugari MP Ayub Savula souught to clarify to Odinga what he had lost stating that “Raila’s has destroyed his support in the Luyha community completely after undermining the leadership of the community. The Luhya vote bloc was important in propelling Raila. Without the Luhya in NASA there is no NASA”.

This weekend, the NASA principals will retreat to their backyards to ‘consult and report back’ on the unfolding events in the political scene.

Mudavadi will hold a series of rallies in Nandi, Vihiga, Kakamega and Bungoma over the weekend.

Musyoka will attend a thanksgiving in Masii for Machakos Woman Rep Joyce Kamene before proceeding for political rallies in Kitui West.

Odinga is expected to attend the burial of Justice Joseph Onguto in Ugenya where he will also meet his supporters.
