Raila Announces Date for 'New Election'

Is Kenya going back to the ballot?

Speaking during an interview on BBC, Mr. Odinga stated that he wants the country to hold the polls in August.

“We want another election and according to our timetable that should be by August this year,” he said.

The former Prime Minister insisted that he does not recognize President Uhuru Kenyatta as the Head of State noting that less than 20 percent of the registered voters participated during the October 26 fresh presidential election.

“We do not recognize his Presidency because it lacks legitimacy. I have also not committed treason by swearing myself as the People’s President because on October 26 less than 20 percent of the registered voters voted,” the NASA leader said.

Reforms

Mr. Odinga added that the Opposition will force the President Kenyatta-led Government to make drastic reforms through the People’s Assemblies established in 15 counties across the Country.

He mentioned that there will be a People’s Convention where six top agendas will be deliberated upon. The issues include; Electoral justice, Independence of Judiciary, reforms of the police force, restructuring and strengthening of devolution, restructuring of the executive power and inclusion.

"These resolutions will be taken to the People’s Convention which is going to be held shortly. We are invoking Article 1 of the constitution,” Odinga mentioned.

The NASA leader dismissed earlier reports that he will appoint Cabinet Secretaries to operate in his Government.

"I did not say that we will appoint ministers. What I said was that we will be the People’s Government. We started off by forming People’s Assemblies in various regions and we had meetings where resolutions were made,” he said.

He assured President Kenyatta that he will not force his way into State House noting: "We will not go to remove Uhuru Kenyatta from State House he can sit there comfortably".
