We have received international calls threatening us – Senators

The Senators have not revealed the identify of the International caller.

Several members of a senate ad-hoc committee probing the Solai Dam tragedy that left 47 people dead in Nakuru in May have claimed that they have received international calls threatening them to stop querying the matter.

Led by Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Junior, the committee has instead vowed to continue and present a report to the assembly for an action to be taken, but failed to reveal the identity of the caller.

Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja on Wednesday evening hinted that the Solai area Senator (Susan Kihika) had received threatening calls from a caller outside Kenya warning her against the matter.

“I hear that even some phone calls have come from outside country to the area Senator and to other colleagues. Please let them know that they are touching the wrong people.

"Let us stand for those people who died. We will continue and a serious report with far-reaching implication will be availed for serious action,” Mr Sakaja said during a session with the media.

Nakuru Senator on her part, however, vowed to stage thorough investigations on the ground that will see the people responsible face a judicial process, even as DPP Noordin Haji on the same stroke ordered the arrest of Mansukh Perry Patel, the dam owner. Mr Patel has since been arrested on Thursday morning.

“We will be on the ground and whoever is responsible, ultimately will have to carry their own cross as nobody is sacred. Forty seven is not just a number, but its lives we are talking about," Ms Kihika has said.

Meanwhile, the ad-hoc committee is set to visit the scene of the tragedy ahead of tabling its findings towards the end of July.
