Sonko’s promise after MCAs rejected Miguna’s nomination

This is my Promise

In a social media post, Mr. Sonko promised that he will be tabling another name after consultations.

“I hereby wish to accept the decision of the Nairobi County Assembly rejecting the nomination of Dr. Miguna Miguna as Nairobi Deputy Governor on the basis that he is a dual citizen as provided for under Article 78 of the Constitution.

“I am committed to respect the decisions of the Nairobi County Assembly without reservations because they represent the sovereignty and infallible will of the Great People of Nairobi County.

“I shall present another qualified nominee to the County Assembly after due consultations to ensure Nairobi County gets a befitting Deputy Governor to support in service delivery," He said.

On Tuesday, MCAs threw out the nomination of Miguna stating that he could not be vetted because of his dual citizenship.

Through Speaker Beatrice Elachi, the MCAs cited Article 78 of the Constitution which stipulates that: "a person is not eligible for election or appointment to a State office unless the person is a citizen of Kenya.”

Sonko controversially nominated Miguna to be his Deputy Governor following alleged wrangles in the Jubilee Party.

His move was speculated to be one meant to rattle the Government.

Miguna has been at loggerheads with President Uhuru Kenyatta-led Government which deported him under controversial circumstances.
