The life story of the deceased Nyeri Governor

The Governor was reported to be rushing from Nyeri to Nairobi for a morning interview with a local media house.
Gakuru was the second Kenyan governor to die in office after Nderitu Gachagua, who incidentally, occupied the same office.
Born 51 years ago, Gakuru was considered to be one of the sharpest brains on matters economics, having served as the founding director of Vision 2030.

The soft spoken politician was seen, in some quarters, as emulating former President Mwai Kibaki who had a similar stellar background in economics and some level of reluctance to engage in hard-knuckle politics.
At a past event attended by this writer, Gakuru had noted, on a light note, that he had never scored anything below an A in his academic life that saw him attain a PhD in Public Administration and Policy, from Arizona State University.
In addition to his PhD, the deceased had two master’s degree. One from Willamette University and an MBA from the University of Nairobi where he had earlier graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree.
Gakuru had also taught at the University of Nairobi for nearly twenty years before venturing into politics. He was an affiliate member of Faculty at the revered Harvard Business School.
His first foray into elective politics was unsuccessful after he was defeated by the late Nderitu Gachagua. His second bid was successful but the win would only earn him less than three months in office.

A past beneficiary of the prestigious Fullbright scholarship, the late Governor has in his short stint shown brilliance and passion on macroeconomics issues that would uplift the lives of his constituents.
His last assignment was as the leader of a group of eight governors who are currently working on a plan to revive the old Nairobi-Nyeri-Nanyuki Railway.
On Monday afternoon, he had hosted a group of Alliance High School students, including his son, who were scheduled to start the KCSE exams on Tuesday.
