KRA intercepts fake Euro currency worth Ksh267 million at JKIA

The fake currency was concealed in trouser linings and was being ferried from Nairobi to Dubai by Norwegian and Sudanese nationals.

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has intercepted fake currency worth over KSh267 million in bundles of Euros at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

The passengers were travelling to Dubai aboard EK722 to UAE and according to the flight itinerary they were to come back to Nairobi before proceeding to Mogadishu, Somalia on Wednesday, November 2, 2016.

Intelligence reports

“The money was in 25 bundles of average 178 notes of 500 Euro bills and was seized at Gate 7 JKIA during our shift operations, following intelligence that the two were suspects,” Commissioner Customs and Border Control Julius Musyoki said.

The exhibits are being held at the customs warehouse awaiting issuance of seizure notice and subsequent handover to the police for investigations.

KRA earlier this year seized luxury vehicles worth Sh28million hidden in mattresses at the Mombasa port.

The vehicles had been declared as personal effects and household goods in order to avoid paying taxes equivalent to their value.
