Football Kenya Federation President Nick Mwendwa has admitted that the country’s chances of hosting the 2018 African Nations Championship are getting slimmer.

With a few months to the tournament, Confederation of African Football (CAF) has put two countries on standby owing to the slow pace at which Kenya is preparing to host the competition.

Speaking at a press briefing held on Thursday at Nyayo National Stadium’s VIP Pavilion where Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Culture and the Arts Hassan Wario, who was supposed to address the media never showed up, Mwendwa accepted the delay in setting up the required infrastructure.

However, he has promised Kenyans that much work will be done in order to ensure that the tournament is staged in the country.

“I know people have talked much about our situation with regard to hosting the tournament and CAF has gone ahead to have some countries on standby but we have to be engaged in serious construction work in order to satisfy Caf officials who will be here on September 7.

“We accept there has been delay, much delay indeed from all stakeholders including the government. The question is how we move forward, to ensure no further delay. There will be a daily plan on how to deliver this, with the media and the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) open to assess the progress,” he said.

Chan 2018 is set to be played between January 12 and February 4.
