FIFA Kenya maintains its position as AFCON Champions Cameroon rewarded in latest rankings

Kenya’s Harambee Stars has maintained its 87th position in the latest FIFA rankings after having not featured in any international friendly match since November last year.

Kenya’s last match was a win over Liberia on November 15, 2016 and is still on an eight-match unbeaten run extending to last year.

The Harambee Stars are slated to play Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Mali, subject to confirmation from the two countries next month in the next Fifa match day window, according to Football Kenya Federation (KFF) president Nick Mwendwa.

Uganda Cranes which featured in the just concluded AFCON tournament in Gabon after a 39 year absence, are East Africa’s best ranked team at 75 position globally and 16 in the continent.

Rwanda is placed 100th while Ethiopia who will face Kenya in the qualifiers for the 2019 AFCON are ranked in position 103. Tanzania meanwhile lies in position 158.

AFCON rewards

Newly crowned African champions Cameroon were rewarded by jumping 29 spots to land in position 33 and third in Africa.

Runners up Egypt tops in the continent for the first time since 2010, and are ranked 23rd globally.

The Pharaohs have climbed twelve positions same as DR Congo who are now fifth in Africa.

Bronze medalists in Gabon meant an upward curve for Burkina Faso who climbed 15 positions and are now 38th in Africa and sixth in the continent. Ghana who finished fourth, are now eighth.

Ivory Coast’s early exit in the group stages at AFCON has seen the Elephants dropping to position 47, down 13 positions.

There were no changes at the top with the best five ranked teams globally maintaining their positions.

Argentina is in first place, Brazil second and Germany is in third place.

Chile and Belgium round off the top five best ranked nations.
