Nothing feels worse than when it gets uncomfortable down there. You just can’t be happy no matter how hard you try to be. Whether it’s itching, irritation or even swelling, you will just be wanting to get a quick fix so that your vagina is happy again.

We previously talked about pain in the vagina during sex and what causes it. In today's article, we address the issue of a swollen vagina. Why would it be swollen and what does it mean?

Check out these causes of a swollen vagina:

1. Allergy

Sometimes it’s nothing serious but some allergic reactions that upset your vagina. The vagina is a very sensitive part and it could react to some of your favourite hygiene and self-care products. The allergy could be due to detergent you used to clean your undies, toilet soap, lubricants, condoms, tampons, or even body lotion.

The solution to this is to avoid the allergen once you identify it. If you just started using a new product and noticed the swelling, that could be the cause.

2. Rough intercourse

Take it slow, girl. Having rough intercourse could not only leave your girl parts feeling sore but also swollen. Inadequate lubrication can also leave your vagina swollen.

3. Bacterial vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) occurs when there is an overgrowth of bacteria in the vagina hence upsetting the pH. The symptoms of BV include swelling of the vagina, foul-smelling vaginal odour, greyish discharge, and itching.

4. Yeast infection

Yeast infections are quite common among women. They cause itching, swelling of the vagina, discharge, and irritated skin. Overgrowth of yeast can also be due to pregnancy, diabetes or use of oral contraceptives.
