President William Ruto has departed for Accra, Ghana, to attend the inauguration of Ghana’s President-elect John Dramani Mahama.
This visit comes after a special invitation extended by Mahama during his December 2024 trip to Kenya.
The high-profile event showcases the warm relations between Kenya and Ghana, two nations deeply rooted in the spirit of pan-Africanism.
Their ties trace back to the pre-independence era when both nations inspired each other’s liberation movements.
While in Accra, President Ruto is scheduled to engage with President-elect Mahama and other Heads of State and Government.
Their discussions will center on areas of mutual interest, including trade, energy, textiles, agriculture, and oil.
The agenda also includes deliberations on strengthening diplomatic relations between Kenya and Ghana, which have enjoyed a strong and cordial partnership for decades.
A key item on President Ruto’s agenda is advocating for reforms within the African Union (AU) to enhance its institutional efficiency and strategic focus.
This aligns with Kenya’s ongoing commitment to driving effective governance and fostering unity across the continent.
Raila Odinga’s AUC campaign
President Ruto will also use the opportunity to thank Ghana for its support of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s candidacy for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson position.
Highlighting Odinga’s pan-African vision and leadership credentials, President Ruto is expected to continue rallying support for the Kenyan candidate in this crucial AU role.
The visit symbolises Kenya’s dedication to regional and continental partnerships and is a reaffirmation of its role as a key player in Africa’s socio-economic and political advancement.
