Four men were on Tuesday evening arrested after they attempted to steal from a Barclays Bank ATM in Ruiru, Kiambu County.
According to a brief by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the four made several attempts to break into the ATM but were busted before they could hack it.
"A mobile phone they were using to make contact to a source, a nylon sack they were to use in loading the money and a motor cycle they were to flee on among the seized items.
"The four; 37-year-old Hillary Ng'eno (KK Security, Runda), 31-year-old Jared Nyang'au (G4S Ruiru), 34-year-old Douglas Momanyi (bodaboda rider) and 43-year-old Jacob Barasa were ambushed by the detectives in the act, after several attempts to empty the ATM backfired," DCI announced.
Sh14 million heist
In April this year, a group of thieves executed a heist on Barclays Bank ATMs at Mutindwa, Buruburu, Kenyatta National Hospital and at The Mater Hospital in South B.
The thieves made away with an estimated Sh14 million in what is said to have been a well-orchestrated heist.
Preliminary investigation by DCI suspected that the robbers may have hacked the ATM systems to cause them to dispense all their content.
Five suspects were later arrested and arraigned in court over the incident.
