Former Meru County Governor Peter Munya on Monday wrote to Meru High Court demanding the removal of his petition challenging Kiraitu Murungi’s election in August 8 polls.

Mr Munya, who filed the petition few days after he joined Raila Odinga’s National Super alliance, and would later go back to Uhuru Kenyatta’s camp, changed his mind, just a day to the swearing-in fete for President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Earlier, President Uhuru Kenyatta had urged the former Council of Governors chairman to reconsider his stand and withdraw the case against his rival Mr Murungi.

Uhuru, in a rally in the run up to the repeat polls at Laare and Maua town in October had told Mr Munya that he was ready to mediate talks between the two politicians and that the Jubilee government would offer Mr Munya a job if they win the October 26 repeat election.

“I urge Mr Munya and Governor Murungi to meet and resolve their differences. I am ready to chair the talks to see them work together,” Uhuru had said.

Pulse Live cannot independently verify whether the “promised job” had been delivered to Mr Munya, who later rallied his support behind Mr Kenyatta in the October 26 polls. Uhuru Kenyatta is currently said to be having a headache in choosing persons of his incoming cabinet, with over 11 cabinet members set to be shown the door.

Earlier, Mr Munya had vowed not to withdraw a petition challenging the election of Kiraitu Murungi as the county boss.

Munya who was defending his seat on the PNU party ticket garnered 232,569 votes against Kiraitu’s 281,737 who ran on the Jubilee ticket.

“I met the President at State House and he told us to resolve our differences without affecting his reelection bid. The petition is already in court and I am not going to withdraw it,” said Munya.

He defended his petition, saying he filed it for those who voted for him.

“People who voted for me asked that I petition the results because they believed the election was not free and fair,” Munya told Meru FM earlier in an interview.
