50% of Kenyans earn less than $100 per month - report

The survey on estimated total monthly income highlighted the disparities in income levels

The survey on estimated total monthly income highlighted the disparities in income levels which indicated that a paltry 5% earn between Sh40,000-Sh100,000.

“24 percent earn between Sh10,000 and Sh25000, ten percent earns between Sh25,000-Sh40,000 and another three percent earns between Sh40,000 and Sh55,000 per month,” noted the research findings.

1% of these households earn between Sh55, 000 to Sh75, 000 whereas another one percent earn between Sh75,000 and Sh100,000 per month.

The study for the first quarter of 2018 involved face to face interviews at the household level with Kenyan adults aged 18 and above living in urban and rural areas.

According to the World Bank, Kenya is the most unequal country in Eastern Africa in terms of income. High levels of inequality in the country means money is poorly distributed and is largely held by a small group of super-earners.
