Kenya Ports Authority unveils smart gate at Nairobi deport that cuts cargo truck time from 15min to 30sec
The new system is aimed at eradicating cumbersome human intervention in cargo exit process reducing chances of system and process manipulation.
The Kenya Ports Authority today launched new smart gates that is expected to go a long way in improving truck turn-around time and enhance security at the Embakasi Container Depot.
Once a truck driver approaches the Nairobi ICD, they will scan a barcode to a barcode reader machine which then identifies the truck and cargo to be collected and advises the driver on where to pick the cargo.

The barcode system is expected to see cargo trucks spend 30 seconds to access the ICD instead of the usual 10-15 minutes.
“This development is in line with a raft measures being implemented by the Authority and our 2018-2022 strategic plan to enhance port efficiency and reduce pilferage of containers.
This underscores our commitment to becoming a world-class sea port of choice. We took a deliberate step in modernising our gates which will go a long way in improving our efficiency at Nairobi ICD,” said Kenya Ports Authority, Acting Managing Director, Dr Daniel Manduku.
“We are currently training all truck drivers so that in the next three months everyone will be well versed with the protocols here.

Our plan is to reduce human intervention at the gates and make it as simple and seamless as possible,” added Dr Manduku.
