Kenya's new tower dwarfs Africa's top 5 tallest buildings

The 70 storey building is located at Nairobi's Upper Hill.

President Uhuru Kenyatta today laid the foundation stone for the Pinnacle Tower, Africa’s tallest building standing at over 300 metres high.

The 70 storey building located at Nairobi's Upper Hill area will offer stylish commercial offices, luxury apartments and a five star Hilton Hotel, joined together by a three storey shopping mall and entertainment center.

Speaking during the ground breaking ceremony, President Kenyatta lauded the new investment saying it would not only create job opportunities for Kenyans but also change the skyline of Nairobi.

"Your choice to invest in Kenya is, indeed, a clear vote of confidence in the policy reforms we have been implementing in the recent past to make Kenya attractive and competitive and to reposition our tourism sector” President Uhuru said.

Once complete, Pinnacle tower will represent ‘the height of African achievement’.

Here are Africa’s four tallest building which looks up to Kenya’s pinnacle tower.

#2. Carlton Center

Located in Johannesburg, South Africa Carlton is technically the tallest building in Africa until Kenya’s Pinnacle tower will be complete.

Standing at 223M ((732 ft) this skyscraper was constructed in 1973 and has 50 floors.

The building was designed by the American architectural Skidmore, Owings and Merrill.

#3. Hassan II mosque

The Hassan II mosque in Casablanca in Morocco makes the list thanks to its  tall minaret.

Standing at 210M (690 ft) it is the tallest religious structure in the Africa and the 7 largest in the world.

The construction cost was between $400 – 700million.

#4 Britam towers

Located in Kenya’s capital, britam tower stands at 200m (660 ft) and has 32 Floors.

It is the regional headquarters of Britam in East and Central Africa and was completed in 2017.

The building was designed by GAPP Architects and Urban Designers and its Principal architect is Chris Kroese.

#4. Ponte City Apartments

Located in Johannesburg, South Africa, Ponte City Apartments stands at a staggering height of 173m (568 ft).

Ponte City Apartments is the tallest residential building on the continent.

It was first opened in 1975 and has 54 floors.

It is cylindrical in shape and at the top of the building there is a neon sign which is the largest sign in the southern hemisphere
