Kenyan taxpayers to bear financial burden of hiring translators for Cuban doctors

The doctors earn a monthly salary of Kshs882,180 at the expense of taxpayers

The well-paid doctors are said to have language difficulties with some of the patients who mostly reside in the rural areas where the grasp of Kenya’s two official languages, Kiswahili and English, is limited at best.

Chairman of the Council of Governors Intergovernmental committee Nandi Sang said the devolved units would seek the services of translators to make the doctors, who mostly speak Spanish, work without obstacles.

The government has set aside a Sh1 billion budget to cater for salaries and other benefits for the 110 Cuban doctors who will serve in local hospitals for two years.

They will take home a monthly salary of Kshs882,180 ($8,793) per month, placing them among Kenya's top earners.

The doctors will also set to get furnished homes, air fares during their annual leave, paid utilities and transport from both the national and county governments.

Health CS Cecily Kariuki said their deployment is part of measures aimed at addressing the shortage of specialists in the country.
