Footage of the Westgate Massacre on the TV show instigates an online onslaught against FOX

On 24th May 2010 our escapades with counterterrorism agent Jack Bauer played by Kiefer Sutherland came to an end after 8 seasons.

24 Legacy

3 years later, 24 had a reboot in the form of ‘24: Legacy’ starring Corey Hawkins as war hero Eric Carter which is a big thing for a black actor to take the lead role in such a successful franchise. Corey is known for playing Heath in ‘The Walking Dead’ and as Dre in the highly-rated 2015 biopic film, ‘Straight Outta Compton’.

This new series has been met with mixed reactions with some hailing Carter as the best thing that has happened to 24 since Jack Bauer because unlike Jack who has on occasions been described as ‘mentally unbalanced and jingoistic’ Carter is is ‘new, exciting, and very  unpredictable'. Plus he is some serious eye-candy, certainly a sight for sore eyes.

Others however have dismissed the new show as a naked cash grab since in their opinion '24' has overstayed its welcome.

But it seems that their sharpest critics are Kenyans who felt sickened by the show’s choice to use real-life footage of the Westgate massacre.

But this time instead of the Westgate massacre, the episode is said to have gone down at Al-Jagred Market in Alexandria Egypt, organized by Ibrahim Bin-Khalid who leads a major terrorist organization.

The use of the real footage has been described as ‘tasteless’ and ‘immoral’ considering that the wounds of the Westgate massacre are still raw. It’s not really illegal as Fox had already acquired the rights but it’s more of a moral issue.

Check out some reactions on Twitter:
