A Kenyan woman who was assaulted during a mob attack in Lebanon is set to be deported amid public outrage

The incident drew sharp criticism on social media

The incident, which was caught on tape, shows a man holding two Kenyan women by the hair and repeatedly hitting them while they scream in pain after which a crowd gathers around them and others join in.

The victims, identified as Rosa and Shamila, were arrested after the incident and taken to a military court.

A lawyer representing the two women said the deportation order against Shamila was in violation of her basic human rights of a fair trial adding that she has not been told the reason for her deportation.

Criticism

The incident drew sharp criticism on social media with regards to mistreatment of migrant domestic workers in Lebanon.

At least 200,000 migrant domestic workers are said to live in the country with a majority of them coming from Ethiopia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and Kenya.

The man seen attacking the women in the video, together with a military officer and a Lebanese woman who joined in the beating, have been arrested

The Kenyan government has since demanded an apology from Lebanese authorities and called for the culprits “to meet the full force of the law”.
