Stimulating brain memory: 7 tips for boosting brain power

The brain has incredible ability to reshape itself and this is true especially when it comes to learning and memory.

But most of the times that is not the case because our modern lifestyle is playing a significant role and contributes to cognitive decline, which is why exposure to toxins, chemicals, poor diet, lack of sleep, stress, and much more can actually hinder the functioning of your brain.

A strong memory depends on the health and vitality of the brain. Whether it’s a student studying for their final exams, a working professional interested in doing all you can to stay mentally sharp, or a senior looking to preserve and enhance your grey matter as you age, there are lots of things you can do to improve your memory and mental performance.

The interesting thing about the brain is that beside it being a very powerful tool, the  human brain has an astonishing ability to adapt and change—even into old age an ability known as neuroplasticity.

With the right type of stimulation, the brain can form new neural pathways, alter existing connections, and adapt and react in ever-changing ways.

You can harness the natural power of neuroplasticity to increase your cognitive abilities, enhance your ability to learn new information, and improve your memory. These tips will show you how.

1. Getting a good night’s sleep

An average adult requires 7-9 hours of sleep each night. The less you sleep, the more your cognitive abilities—including your memory—will suffer. During sleep, the brain firms up memories of recently acquired information and getting enough sleep will help you getting the optimal brain and body functioning during the waking hours.

Taking a nap throughout the day, can also help you to retain memory as well as recharge your brain and keep it sharper.

2. Remain fit and not skipping exercise

Exercise increases the supply of oxygen to the brain which can reduce brain memory loss and other disorders and therefore a great way to boost brain power.

With the lifestyle that we have it is extremely necessary to include exercise into our routines. Indulge in aerobics, physical activities which require the motor skills and coordination of hands and eyes are good for brain building.

3. Workout your brain

The human brain is so volatile that it can find millions of ways for recalling information and solving familiar problems, with a minimum of efforts. But, you need to keep stimulating the brain with newer challenges so that it grows and develops. So pick up the daily newspaper and work on that crossword puzzle, read a book, or enjoy a game of solitaire or even Sudoku.

4. Eat right

The foods you eat – or don't eat – play a crucial role in your memory. Fresh vegetables are essential, as are healthy fats and avoiding sugar and grain carbohydrates. Increasing the intake of omega 3 and reducing on saturated fats is a great way to help in brain boosting. Also it is important to include fruits and vegetables in your diet. The oils that we use in our cooking are also something that we should not overlook. For instance the use of coconut oil which is a healthy fat for brain function.

5. Eat berries

Studies have tied the consumption of berries—especially blueberries—to improved memory recall and retention. Berries are packed with flavonoids, which are linked to improved vascular function. Because better blood flow is good for your brain, the flavonoids in berries could explain why the fruit boosts recall.

6. Laugh Out Loud

It goes without saying that laughter is the best medicine. There are so many researches around this. This holds true to brain and memory as well as the body.

So stop taking life too seriously and spend time with people who are humorous and fun, laugh at yourself, have tiny reminders that make you smile or even laugh out loud, play with kids and have a life surrounded with laughter to boost your brain power.

7. Chat with friends

Countless studies show that a life full of friends and fun comes with cognitive benefits. You probably don't realize it, but having a conversation with another person requires your brain to complete several high-level processes at once. You have to follow what the person is saying, interpret the meaning of her words, and come up with an appropriate reply and all this requires effort.
