The two most popular weekend vacation spots among Kenyans, according to Jumia
These destinations record last minute bookings and are very popular for the weekends
The two towns located between Nairobi and Western Kenya recorded a high number of travellers during the weekend owing to their close proximity to the capital city and some upcoming properties.
"Naivasha and Nakuru are usually very popular for the weekends...we see lots of last minute bookings for these destinations," Jumia Travel Country Manager Cyrus Onyiego said.
The cities were also preferred for business trips seeing that they are not only close to Nairobi but also due to the many number of hotels and lodges found in the areas.
Kisumu
"We are seeing a trend where many business and conference meetings are moving from Nairobi to popular leisure destinations such as Naivasha and Nakuru," Jumia Travel PR manager Josephine Wawira told Business Insider SSA.
However, Nairobi remains the most booked destination — 35 per cent — for people coming from outside the country as well as from local business people living in other Kenyan cities.
It is closely followed by Mombasa and Diani at 30% and 15% respectively.
Mr Onyiego also noted that there is a growing demand for travel and business in far-flung towns such as Kisumu and Eldoret owing to the rise in middle-level and high-end hotels.
Kenya earned Sh121 billion ($1.2 billion) from tourism expenditures in 2017, up from approximately Sh99.7 billion (989 million) in 2016, a 20% increase.
