Purple is the colour for 2018 International Women’s Day

Today, Thursday, March 8, 2018, women across the entire continent will be celebrating the existence of womanhood with the purple colour.

According to the official International Women’s Day website, Purple is the official colour of International Women’s Day.

Founded more than a century ago after some 15,000 when women marched in New York City to demand better working conditions and voting rights, purple as the choice of colour for the day’s celebration symbolizes women.

“Internationally, purple is a color for symbolizing women. Historically, the combination of purple, green and white to symbolize women’s equality originated from the Women’s Social and Political Union in the U.K. in 1908. Purple signifies justice and dignity. Green symbolizes hope. White represents purity, but is no longer used due to ‘purity’ being a controversial concept. The introduction of the color yellow representing a ‘new dawn’ is commonly used to signify a second wave of feminism. Thus purple with green represents traditional feminism, purple with yellow represents progressive contemporary feminism,” the website says.

According to Sensational Colour, the Purple colour embodies the balance of red’s stimulation and blue’s calm. With a sense of mystic and royal qualities, purple is a colour often well liked by very creative or eccentric types and is the favorite color of adolescent girls.

The Purple colour has been found to uplift, calms the mind and nerves, offers a sense of spirituality and encourages creativity.
