Kofi Annan, Ghanaian diplomat and former UN Secretary-General, Dies at 80

The United Nations Migration Agency announced his death via a twitter post on Saturday, August 18, 2018.

In 2001, Annan was awarded the Peace Prize for having revitalized the UN and given priority to human rights and humanitarian work.

“Today we mourn the loss of a great man, a leader, and a visionary: former UN Secretary General KofiAnnan,” the UN agency wrote.

In a statement released on Saturday morning, the family said the former Secretary General of the UN and Nobel Peace Laureate, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 18, 2018, after a short illness.

"The family kindly request privacy at this time of mourning. All arrangements to celebrate his remarkable life will be announced later."

Kofi Annan was a global statesman and a deeply committed internationalist who fought throughout his life for a fairer and more peaceful world.
