Kenyans are a furious lot after learning of their legislators’ bid to reject pay cuts by the Salary and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

The commission had in July this year announced that all state officials and lawmakers in the 2017-2022 government would pocket much lower salaries and fewer allowances to save taxpayers more than Sh8 billion annually.

In the new pay structure, the Members of Parliament would have their salaries slashed from the current Sh710, 000 ($6,900) to Sh621, 250 ($6,000). This notwithstanding the fact that the MPs are the world's second highest-paid servant leaders, second only to Nigeria.

Other allowances such as special parliamentary allowance, reimbursable mileage allowance, sitting allowance for plenary sessions and special responsibility allowances were as well abolished.

However, on Wednesday,  women representative Gladys Wanga dismissed the review as a public relations gimmick. Her sentiments were echoed by her counterpart from Kiambu county Gathoni wa Muchomba who was quoted as saying: "I want to be paid well. I want to be honored for who I am."

Through the hashtag, #MPsPay, Kenyans on Twitter (KOT) vented out their anger at the legislators who they have always labelled as "M-pigs"(greedy politicians).
