5 times Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s phone conversations were leaked online
The governor has been criticized for lacking phone etiquette
The flamboyant politician has hit headlines recently after leaking audio conversations of individuals attempting to bribe him.
In the latest incident, he exposed businessman Praful Kumar for alleged bribery claims.
It is a tactic he has used since his political debut in 2010 to perhaps arm-twist or bail those he records.
Here now are five incidences where Sonko put private phone conversations in public:
May 2014: Puts President Kenyatta on loud speaker
Sonko intervened during a demolition exercise in Nairobi's South B area.
The then Nairobi Senator called President Kenyatta and put him on loud speaker. On orders from the head of state, the exercise was halted.
December 2016: Sonko, land grabbing suspect in verbal altercation
An audio recording emerged of Sonko and a land grabbing suspect engaged in a heated argument.
Francis Nyaga got into a heated argument with Sonko, the then Nairobi Senator, over the demolition of an elderly couple’s house in Parklands, Nairobi over the weekend.
Nyaga was arrested and charged with malicious damage to property.
December 2017: Leaks text conversation between him and former deputy, Polycarp Igathe
Sonko shared screenshots of a conversation he had with his former deputy, Polycarp Igathe, to dismiss a report in one of the dailies that they were having a frosty relationship.
January 2018: Leaks phone conversation with Igathe
A leaked telephone recording between Sonko and former Nairobi deputy governor, Polycarp Igathe, went viral online, just hours before the latter resigned.
In the recording, Sonko briefed his deputy on various official matters, including payments made to road constructors and encouraged Igathe to attend a morning television interview.
August 2018: Phone call recording between him and Waititu goes viral
A video emerged of Kiambu Governor, Ferdinand Waititu, pleading with Mike Sonko to release his wife and 15 other people who were arrested over illegal construction of buildings.
In the video, Waititu reminded Sonko of their political relationship in Nairobi and asked him to secure the release of those arrested.
