This is after an audit report by the Inspectorate of State Corporations showed that Central Kenya has the highest number of individuals heading parastatals at 157, accounting for close to 18 per cent of all board positions.

Kiambu, where President Uhuru Kenyatta hails from, has 51 positions. The county is closely followed by Murang’a and Kirinyaga with 23 and 16 positions respectively.

Counties in Mt Kenya East – Meru, Tharaka Nithi and Embu – have 78 positions. Lower Eastern has only 37 board positions.

Abdulswamad Nassir, who chairs PIC, said the report paints a picture of skewed appointments to the various State corporation boards. He called on the head-of-state to ensure there is equitable distribution of the powerful positions.

Impartiality

"There is no fairness and we want to see balance,” Nassir said.

The five counties of Northern and Northeastern Kenya have 47 board positions, accounting for five per cent.

Elsewhere the Coastal region has 66 positions in the approximately 876 board positions with Kwale leading the pack at 23 positions, followed closely by Mombasa, which has 16 positions.

Counties in Western Kenya have 90 positions whereas those in the Nyanza region have 82 positions.

The 2010 Constitution introduced the ethnic representation requirement to check a historical trend where tribesmen of those in power were favoured during recruitment.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has maintained that his government will stop the practice of distributing State jobs to political followers.
