Nigeria's Acting President fires the head of state secret service over National Assembly barricade

The blockage generated reactions from Nigerians and the international community.

Before his termination, Lawal Daura is a key member and kinsman of President Muhammadu Buhari, who is also from Daura, Katsina State. Many believed he is one of the untouchable personalities in the federal cabinet.

Members and lawmakers of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, were blocked from gaining access to the National Assembly complex on Tuesday morning by operatives of the Department of State Services on an 'order from above'.

In various videos posted online, security agents, some of whom were masked mounted the entrance to the National Assembly complex though they later allowed lawmakers to enter but continued to bar government agents and journalists.

But Osinbajo who was in Lagos, Nigeria's south-western state, ordered the termination of the appointment of the DG of the DSS.

The acting president also directed him to hand over to the most senior officer of the State Security Service until further notice.

Party politics ahead of 2019 general election

Weeks ago, Nigeria's Senate President, Bukola Saraki and his House of Representatives counterpart, Yakubu Dogara defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

With their defections, some lawmakers also quit the President Muhammadu Buhari’s ruling party and joined the main opposition.

The defection is part of calculations for the 2019 general elections where President Muhammadu Buhari is also in the race for another four-year term in office.
