Sean Spicer.

The White House press secretary, Sean Spicer, said on Wednesday that President Donald Trump "and a small group of people" knew "exactly" what the president meant when he tweeted just after midnight, "Despite the constant negative press covfefe."

Spicer was asked about Trump's viral "covfefe" tweet during an off-camera briefing.

"I think the president and a small group of people know exactly what he meant," Spicer said.

When Hunter Walker of Yahoo News asked whether people should be worried about Trump posting late-night "incoherent tweets," Spicer said, "No."

Reporters later shouted questions at Spicer about the meaning of the tweet, but he did not answer.

The tweet was up on the president's account for about six hours before it was deleted. In the meantime, the apparent typo went viral.

Trump tweeted in jest about the whole ordeal just after 6 a.m.

"Who can figure out the true meaning of 'covfefe' ???" he wrote. "Enjoy!"
