What Zuma told Uhuru Kenyatta when they met in Durban

The two presidents are looking forward to improved trade terms

President Kenyatta was welcomed at the Durban official residence of his compatriot, Jacob Zuma on Thursday and spent two hours interacting with the outgoing South African leader on a number of issues including the Libyan slave trade and South Sudan’s civil war.

"The South Sudan issue is quite a challenge to all of us. The kind of new slavery taking place in Libya is an issue that Africa cannot allow to happen again. It's an issue we believe we need to give serious attention to," he said.

The Kenyan election was also on the agenda with Zuma asking for a respect for democracy.

"We talked about that as well because there are things that we believe need to be done right in the continent, particularly the respect of our democracies that we have all accepted."

With both the Kenyan and South African economy struggling to grow, the two leaders also discussed avenues of cooperation on job creation and improved trade.

"We had the opportunity to exchange views on a number of issues largely pertaining to how we can strengthen and deepen the relationship between our two countries; how we can work together for the mutual prosperity of our people, increase trade between ourselves and how we can also improve connectivity in our continent, which is critical to our industrial development [and] which will enable us to create the jobs that our young people require " President Zuma revealed.

President Kenyatta during his visit has also been invited to join the 106th birthday celebrations of the governing African National Congress (ANC) party on Saturday.
