Trump and McCain had a contentious relationship since the new administration took over

US President Donald Trump ignored shouted questions from reporters about the late Sen. John McCain in the Oval Office.

Trump, who welcomed Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta to the White House on Monday, remained mum when one reporter was heard saying:“Any thoughts on John McCain?”

ABC News White House correspondent Jonathan Karl indicated that he shouted the question several times but the president never answered.

A similar scene occurred, earlier in the day, where Trump remained stone-faced behind the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office after announcing a trade breakthrough with Mexico.

Contentious relationship

Trump and McCain had a contentious relationship since the new administration took over, with McCain repeatedly criticizing Trump’s policies and the president launching several personal attacks on the senator.

The president continued to mock McCain even after his cancer diagnosis last year and during his final weeks.

Trump, however, bowed to pressure later on Monday, offering brief plaudits for the late Vietnam War veteran.

"Despite our differences on policy and politics, I respect Senator John McCain's service to our country," Trump wrote in the four-paragraph statement.

After facing criticism for raising the flags at the White House to full-staff after lowering them on Saturday, Trump said he'd approved them lowered again.
