Dafabet International, owned by Philippines-based betting firm Emphasis Service Ltd (ESL), has started operations in Kenya amid excitement among sports gamblers.

The entry of Dafabet comes barely days after the government said it was open for talks on reviewing the tax proposal on betting firms.

President Uhuru Kenyatta said on Monday Treasury’s proposal to increase taxation to 50 per cent of the firms’ gross revenues was meant to increase the threshold on the people who can gamble on the different platforms and not to punish betting firms in the industry.

"Exciting venture"

Dafabet will now join the likes of Sportpesa, Betin, Elitebet and Mcheza as major players in the Kenyan betting industry.

Kenya becomes their first port in Africa, a venture which the firm describes as "perhaps their most exciting operation after China.”

In addition to offering customers the opportunity to place a bet for as low as Sh50 for a match, Dafabet will also offer higher players the opportunity for "bigger bets".

The firm also offers a daily Jackpot of Sh1.5million where gamblers can win for correct prediction of the scores of all the 12 matches, a unique offer that is not currently in the market.

Currently, it is the shirt sponsor of four professional football clubs across the United Kingdom- Sunderland and Burnley in the English Premier League, Blackburn Rovers in the English Championship and Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.
