Feeling like your boss just hates you? Is this making your work difficult?
Here are 4 things to do if your boss does not like you
Here are some of the things to consider if the relationship with your boss is not the best.
You may happen to have a situation where your relationship with your employer is not the best. This could be based on among other things your job performance or simply not interacting with him/her based on assumptions about how he or she views about you.
And while it is possible to change the situation, here are some of the things to consider if the relationship with your boss does not improve:
- Seek advice from colleagues.
Could it be that you are the only one having a problem with the boss? Are there other colleagues who report to your boss and have more positive relationships? These are some of the questions you should first ask yourself if there is any misunderstanding between you and your boss.
Try and see if there is a different approach that they are taking or anything you can learn from their performance. Seek advice from your colleagues.
- Look at yourself.
It is natural for us to act more coldly to people who we think might not like us and then they in turn might act more coldly towards us. In this case, it could be possible that you are avoiding interaction with your boss or unconsciously conveying bad feelings due to your assumptions about how he or she views you.
Instead, find the opportunity to engage your boss and to show respect and positive regard in small ways.
- Re-evaluate your performance.
In other words, improve your performance especially if it is one of the reasons why your boss doesn't like. Have a frank discussion with him/her about areas of potential improvement and enact a plan to address these issues.
Go ahead and ask for more frequent performance evaluations, until you and your boss feel that your performance has improved. This indicates to your employer that you are taking the initiative to become a stronger employee.
- Consider leaving.
When all efforts to fix your relationship fail, then it might be time to consider alternative employment either in another department or with another employer. In this case, be careful not to act out in any way that might precipitate an untimely firing.
Maintain a positive relationship as you might need a reference at some point in the future or a prospective employer might conduct a background check and reach out to your boss.
