How to mute Facebook stories on a computer or mobile device

It's easy to mute Facebook stories whether it's an individual person or a page you follow on both the mobile app and desktop website.

  • Facebook Stories are temporary posts often consisting of photos or videos found at the top of your newsfeed. These stories expire after 24 hours.
  • If you no longer wish to see stories from an account, click or tap the three dots in the upper right hand corner to mute.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories .

Even if you don't want to unfriend an individual on Facebook or hide a page's content, you can still mute their stories easily.

Muting stories will hide any new stories that an individual person or page uploads. To do so, click or tap the three dots found in the upper right hand corner of a story. On the mobile app, you can also press and hold a story to open the same pop-up to mute.

It's important to note that other content such as photo posts, status updates, or article shares will not be hidden. Muting stories applies only to the temporary 24-hour posts that appear at the top of your newsfeed. Everything else will still appear in your newsfeed below.

Here's how to mute a story.

1. Log into Facebook on your preferred browser on a Mac or PC.

2. At the top of your newsfeed, you'll find active stories. Click "See all." (You can also click on a single one to jump to its details on the "See all" page as well.)

3. Select a story if you haven't already. You'll find a list on the left hand side. Click on a blue circle to open its details.

4. Click on the three dots in the right hand corner of the story.

5. Click "Mute."

6. This will open a pop-up confirming the decision to mute the story. Click the blue "Mute" button to complete the process.

1. Open the Facebook app on your phone or tablet. The app should automatically open to the first tab at the bottom the home tab which will display a condensed version of your newsfeed. Live stories will still be found at the top.

2. Press and hold the story you'd like to mute.

3. This will open a small pop-up where you'll have the option to tap "Mute."

4. You can also tap to watch a story and tap the three dots in the upper right hand corner (like you would on your desktop) instead. This will open a similar pop-up where you'll see the same option. Tap to mute.
