Snapchat paid $890K to protect Evan Spiegel — Here's how that compares to other tech CEOs

It's a CEO's job to run the company, but it often falls to the company to keep them safe in turn.

Evan Spiegel

Evan Spiegel is already known for his penchant of riding a black SUV throughout Venice, and job listings show his security guards must come armed.

But while protecting Spiegel cost almost $900,000 in 2016, he's hardly alone among tech CEO who have big money paid to keep them safe. Business Insider combed through US Securities and Exchange Commission filings to find what it costs to protect some of the most powerful CEOs in tech. Because this information is found on proxy statements that companies issue at different times throughout the year, some totals reflect security costs for either 2015 or 2016, depending on when they most recently filed.

Here's what companies are paying in order to protect their top brass:

IBM CEO Ginni Rometty: Up to $617,794

Rather than identifying her security costs, IBM lists costs of security under other compensation, which includes ground transportation, an annual physical, family attendance at IBM events, and other personal expenses.

In 2015, Rometty's "Other Compensation" totaled $866,621, $248,827 of which was use of company aircraft. That means her security costs alongside all those other expenses could be up to $617,794.
