Kenya hosts the first Google Web Rangers Africa Summit

The summit is aimed at spreading awareness about internet safety and promoting responsible digital citizenship on the continent.

26 Web Rangers drawn from Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa will be attending the summit at Brookhouse School, Nairobi.

The summit, which runs until Friday September 7, is a forum to meet and share ideas on how the internet can be made a safer place for young users in their respective countries.

Fatuma Hirsi, PS Broadcasting and Telecommunication, congratulated Google for conceptualizing the programme and scaling it to many countries within a short span of time.

”Programmes such as Web Rangers are a very welcome complement to the work that parents, teachers, guardians, and governments do in building a better world for our children,” said Ms. Fatuma who also thanked the tech giant for choosing Kenya as the summit host.

Cyberbullying

Participants will among other things learn how to tackle real-life policy issues with a focus on cyberbullying, sexting, sharing personal information online and catfishing.

Started in Israel in 2011, Web Rangers has since grown to 15 countries around the world. In Africa, Web Rangers is active in 3 countries - Kenya, South Africa and Nigeria.

The digital literacy programme seeks to promote and educate the youth about how the internet is an empowering tool relevant to their lives and their future.
