Nigerians are signing a petition against the high cost of internet subscription

The petition started in January 2018 has gathered over 21,000 signatures out of 25,000 signatures benchmark on the popular petition website, Change.org.

Titled 'End high internet subscription charges for Spectranet, Smile and Ntel in Nigeria.' Shallangwa said, “Internet providers charge too much for internet service, despite poor network coverage. They keep increasing the prize (price) of the internet without improving their service.”

High cost of data in Nigeria

In a recent report by TechCabal, Africa’s largest telecoms company, MTN offers a 1G monthly data bundle for about $3 (1,000 Naira) same as 9Mobile. On the other hand, Globacom offers 1.6 GB (excluding bonus) for the same validity period at $3 while Airtel offers 1.5 G for the same price.

Other broadband wireless network such as Smile, Spectranet, Swift, Ntel offer much data cost than the mobile telecommunications.

The Nigerian regulatory agency on the cost of data

The Nigerian government in June 2018, said it approved the new framework that will give telecommunication companies the opportunity to participate in spectrum sharing.

Prof. Umar Danbatta, the Executive Vice Chairman of Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC), disclosed that the commission will release a new price for data, following the new framework.

As at date, there has been no implementation of the new price for data in the country yet.
