Ex-KTN news anchor recounts how she was forced to undo braids before going on air

She speaks!

Joy Doreen Biira

Former KTN business news anchor Joy Doreen Biira has narrated how she was once forced to undo her freshly plaited braids, before going on air.

She went on to say that she was told that orders from their superiors demanded that news anchors’ hair be straight.

In a series of tweets, Biira further disclosed that after straightening the hair, the then stylist said that her hair was not straight enough and that it looked too big for on air presentation.

The mother of two questioned how one would encourage the younger generation to know that African hair is good, without embracing it.

Won’t forget undoing my freshly plaited braids in the newsroom just hours before going on air to do business news, because standing orders from above said your hair is either straight or you don’t get on air. Then when the hair was out and straightened it was not straight enough! The stylist at the time said hair looked too big on air ... so we are Africans but should wear hair that’s unAfrican? How are we gonna encourage younger girls and women to believe and know that our African hair, braided or not is still good hair?” asked Ms Biira.

Her words came shortly after British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) journalist Nancy Kacungira tweeted a picture of herself presenting while rocking plaited braids.

So many people: You can’t be a news anchor and wear braids,” Kacungira captioned the photo.

Other female journalists who have been through the same responded to the tweet sharing their experiences.
