Former Royal Media Journalist Awarded Sh1 million for wrongful CRB listing

Damages for the wrong listing

Royal Media Services offices in Nairobi

Award-winning Investigative Journalist Mwenda Njoka and his wife Hilda Kaari, have been awarded Sh1 million by Cfc Stanbic Bank for wrongful CRB listing.

A Nairobi Court ordered Stanbic to pay the two, damages of being placed wrongful under the credit reference bureau (CRB) yet they had cleared a loan they borrowed from the Bank.

The couple had sued the bank and Credit Reference Bureau Africa Ltd on August 29, 2012, seeking Sh5 million damages for being labelled loan defaulters.

The two argued that the listing was done at a time they had already cleared their loan with CfC Stanbic.

The listing caused Barclays Bank of Kenya to deny them a loan facility which was already on progress for the purchase of a house.

Mwenda has previously worked with the Standard Newspapers where he won the 2003 Journalist of the Year award under the auspices of Kenya Union of Journalists, Nation Media Group and Royal media services.

Currently he is the spokesman for the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government.

Njoka is also the founder of non-profit media development organization; Africa Centre for Investigative Journalism (ACIJ).
