“It was incredibly hard and I need to say now that our baby choked on pureed food. And to all the mothers and fathers out there, the biggest cause of death of children less than one year is choking. Children can choke on liquids and they can choke on solids” She said opening up on the incident that led to his death.
Mrs Gichuru also opened up about the unfathomable and devastating pain that came with losing her son.
“My life is my children, I was devastated beyond anything. I am telling you the kind of grief where you cannot breathe. I would literally wake up and (breaths deeply) and search for breath because I had no breath in my body. I yearned to sleep at night because in my sleep he would come in my dreams, I was holding him again. It was a traumatizing time and I actually said to my husband ‘We are never going to have another child again’. I can’t go through this again.” She said on K24's Talk Central.
But her husband encouraged her by saying “If we have faith we have to keep on living…You can’t give up, it’s a sign of faithlessness, Julie we are still alive and in faith, we must continue living.”
Encouraged by her husband’s words Julie told God to warm her arms again and she bore two sons Daniel and Joseph.
To keep the memory of her late son Mwaura alive Julie revealed that they make a conscious effort to make her sons Daniel and Joseph know that they had a brother called Mwaura.
“The other two remember, they will never forget, they had to deal with their own trauma and we had to be very open with them. Every night my children pray, Dear God, give a kiss to cucu who passed away and our brother Mwaura who is in heaven. So it’s like he is still present in our family." Julie added.
