Top Kenyan celebrities who died in 2017 (Photos)

Their deaths were a big blow to Kenyans.

Here are some celebrities who left us this year:

1. Big Kev

Tru Blaq Entertainment's founder Kevin Ombajo otherwise known as Big Kev died on Saturday, July 29, 2017, at the Nairobi Hospital after a long battle with a recurring brain tumour that rendered him blind after a life-saving operation in India.

The renowned events' organiser had undergone over 10 surgeries during his seven-year-long battle with the benign brain tumour before it claimed his life.

The charismatic events organizer was laid to rest in Gem, Siaya.

2. Janet Kanini Ikua

Former NTV presenter Janet Kanini died on April 1st after a brave long battle with Stage IV lung cancer. The news was broken by a Tweet from Sidebar Host Larry Madowo.

"My friend [Kanini] breathed her last this morning," NTV anchor Larry Madowo tweeted.

Kanini who had been battling cancer for a long time was announced cancer-free in February last year before the disease resurfaced again and claimed her life.

3. Ayeiya

Churchill Show comedian Ayeiya passed away during the Easter season in a gruesome road accident along Magadi road, near the Catholic University of East Africa after the car he was in rammed into an electric post.

The comedian was travelling with his wife, actor Maina Olwenya and another Churchill show comedian Paul ‘Wakimani’ Oguttu before the tragic accident claimed AKA’s life and sent Paul ‘Wakimani’  and AKA’s wife to the Kenyatta Hospital.

4. Agawo Patrobas aka Papa

The Veteran radio presenter who worked at Ramogi FM till last year passed away after a short illness while undergoing treatment at Nairobi Women’s Hospital

5. Kanene International

On 9 December 2017 Kenyans woke up to the tragic news that seven artistes had perished in a grisly road accident along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway.

The artistes Kanene International (Weldon Cheruiyot), Mabengo, Sun star, Dj Nico En Embassy and three dancers perished ahead of a mega-concert after the Probox there were in had a head-on collision with a truck.

Following the tragedy, many leaders came forward to send their condolences among them Deputy President William Ruto who tweeted “Heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of Weldon Cheruiyot of Kenene International and his troupe following a tragic road crash last evening. We also mourn with those who lost their loved ones in the accident at Moinonin.”

6. Mercy Mokeira

Former Miss Nyamira county passed away due to some illness that she contracted after a visit to Tanzania last year. The doctors couldn’t establish what was ailing her despite excessive weight loss and feeling weak all the time.

The beauty queen passed away after suffering from excessive body heat due to her mysterious illness on Saturday, January 28th at North Kinangop Hospital.

7. Maureen Wanza

Actress Maureen Wanza passed away in September while delivering her baby at a Kilifi Hospital. He baby also did not survive.

Speaking to Ommydallah, the C.E.O of Ashiners Films Ann Hamburg described her death as a big blow to not only the organization but also the Kenyan film industry. “She had gone to Kilifi to give birth but she died in the process. The kid also died. This is a very big blow to us, very sad indeed.”
